Known for several names as water spinach, swamp cabbage and chinese watercress. Grows both in water or moist soil. Thrives in hot, humid conditions and dies back when the weather turns cool or dry. Both leaves and stems are edible and very nutritious, as well.
Water spinach or better known to us as kangkong can be grown both in pots or direct to ground.
Plant kangkong in an area with full sun or partial shade and where the plant will have shelter from the wind.
Saturate the soil with water. Kangkong grows in swampy areas. It will need to be watered daily to keep the soil muddy. Mix in compost or manure to add nutrients to the soil before planting.
Plant seeds or cuttings 5-12” apart and 6” deep. Fertilize with a high nitrogen liquid fertilizer every 2weeks after planting.
Harvest the plants before flowering 1-2months after planting. Cut the stem 2” above the soil line so the plant will continue to grow new shoots. Kangkong will grow all year long in hot, humid weather.

Sowing kangkong in pots:
Sow seeds in fresh potting soil about .5cm deep. Ensure that you keep the seeds consistently moist. Temperature should remain around 68F (20C). Germination occurs within a couple of weeks. However, to speed up germination, soak the seeds overnight in lukewarm water.
