PLANT DESCRIPRION:
ABOUT THIS GUAVA TREE
Malaysian Red Guava Tree (psidium guajava) – Delicious and Highly Ornamental – Malaysian Red Guava is a productive tree from Malaysia, producing medium size fruit for eating fresh off the tree or canning and preserving. The bumpy, round shaped fruit is maroon on the exterior with a unique pinkish-cream interior flesh. Fruit typically scales in at 0.8 – 1.3 lbs. and are floral, mild and aromatic with a sweet juicy pulp. The maturing trunk of this Guava tree is covered in beautiful copper colored bark that peels off regularly to expose shades of pink and green. Light pruning is recommended to develop a strong base in order to support the additional weight during fruiting season.
Our plants allow you to enjoy fruit in the first year or so. All the Guava trees we offer are vegetatively propagated from healthy, vigorous, fruit producing mother stock, grown right here in our nursery. This means, you receive an exact clone, true in form and flavor and won’t have to wait four to five years to enjoy fresh homegrown fruit, as is often the case with seed grown or tissue culture plants. Truly a better tree!
The growth rate of Malaysian Red will vary greatly depending on soil type, sunlight, temperature and other factors. A few leaves are often trimmed prior to shipping to reduce transpiration and travel stress.
GUAVA TREE CARE
Guavas are easy to grow, delicious fruit producing trees often producing 75 pounds of fruit per year. Guava will grow happily, flower and fruit in a pot or in-ground. They add a tropical accent to any outdoor space, garden or patio. In cooler zones a containerized Guava can be relocated indoors for the winter months.
When you receive your new Guava, there is no need to worry about planting right away. Your new plant can be stored for a while by simply placing it in a bucket and moving it to a shady location, simply keep moist. This will give you plenty of time to select the ideal location for your new Guava.
CONTAINER SIZE
All Guava varieties grow very well in containers, indoors or on the patio. Smaller varieties grow best indoors in 10? to 14? diameter pots while larger varieties need enough room for growth, generally a 14? to a 24? diameter, 14? deep container will suffice. Remember the looser the roots, the taller and healthier your Guava will be. When the plant becomes root bound its growth will slow, at that point it is time for a larger pot.
SOIL
Malaysian Red Guava enjoy a well drained, general potting mix easily found at your local box store. Remember try to stay away from arid or wet, mucky soils.
